The Tree Is Up!

I have been spending my Sunday doing what I look forward to every single year... decorating for Christmas! I had already put lights on the tree yesterday (which was great since it took me 2 hours!) so today's big task was putting the ornaments on. I am proud to say that I am happy with the result! Here are some pictures of the tree and a couple of my favorite ornaments.

I also decorated some of the living room and dining room but ran out of decorations. We moved from a 2 bedroom apartment to a 5 bedroom house so needless to say, I knew I wasn't going to have enough. I think I will be stopping by some of my fave Christmas decoration stores (Walmart, Big Lots, Michaels) later this week to stock up on more and then I will have pictures to share. I also worked on my christmas cards today because I am sending out almost 60 of them and I did so while watching Home Alone, which put me in a festive mood. I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday weekend!

Turkey, Football, and All That Jazz

Hello everyone! Sorry it's been so long but I have been busy spending time with family and getting stuff done. Thanksgiving was great, I got to see family I hadn't seen in a long time and had a wonderful meal full of every dish you could imagine. My papa fried a turkey for my husband and I so now we have 8 lbs of fried turkey in the refrigerator (with the other half given to friends). If you have never had fried turkey, I highly recommend you try it sometime... it's amazing!

I said I was going to wake up early with all the crazies on Black Friday and do some shopping but I didn't. When that alarm went off at 6am, I decided sleep was more important. There wasn't really anything I needed that wasn't going to be there later so I slept in til 10am instead :). I had to drive my mother and uncle to Orlando to drop them off and did some shopping afterwards so I accomplished a bit of shopping there. When I got home, my husband had the Christmas tree up and I then spent 2 hours putting lights on it the old-fashioned way. Tomorrow, I will add the ornaments and take pictures so you can see.

Today was game day in Tampa; our last home game against the Miami Hurricanes. The tailgate was incredible because our realtor (who runs the tailgates) had brought in Mojito pulled pork and chicken and yellow rice, which was so good. It was a little chilly, which was a nice change of pace and appropriate for November. Unfortunately, we lost to Miami...bad. It happens.

I am devoting my entire day tomorrow to decorating the house and tree. My husband will be busy watching football so I'll have the whole house to myself to make festive. I will be playing Christmas music, lighting the Christmas candles, and disappearing into my own little festive world. Pictures to come!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

It is raining in Florida right now so it doesn't feel like the day before Thanksgiving but I am enjoying the first day of my 5 day weekend. Today, I will probably pull some Christmas decorations out and put away my Thanksgiving ones so I have something to do.

Tomorrow, I will be making my awesome green bean casserole and heading over to my grandparents' house for the Thanksgiving meal. My grandparents go all the way every year and my Papa's fried turkey is the best thing I've ever had!

Friday is Black Friday, something my husband and I always participate in. One year, we actually camped out from midnight to 5am to get an LCD tv (and it was 45 degrees outside at the time...yikes!) This year, we are not going to be as gung-ho and will be simply waking up a little earlier to head out to different stores and get some Christmas shopping done. I'll also be taking my Mom back home to Orlando so we might stop by some outlet stores :)

I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving and remembers everything they are thankful for. I am thankful for my family, friends, wonderful husband, new house, food, health, and wonderful blogger friends like you!

A Classic for Winter Moisture

A couple of years ago, I was signed up to receive samples from Glamour magazine. I was surprised when I received a package from them right around winter time. When I opened it up, there was a full sized bottle of Johnson's Baby Oil and a door hanger. The door hanger described how using baby oil could combat the winter's skin-drying effects and asked that I give it a try for a month to see. Now, being in Florida, I can't say that we have bad winters but you definitely feel your skin losing moisture anytime you go outside. So I tried it out and it really works! Here are some tips to get the most out of this treatment:

1. A couple of times a week, exfoliate in the shower to remove dry skin.
2. After the shower, apply oil while body still has some water on it, which helps spread it evenly.
3. Towel dry

It sounds like it would make your skin oily and clogged but it doesn't. It smells great and it makes your skin incredibly soft. Give it a try!

Jean Straps

Now that winter is upon us (well, some of us), the boots over jeans look is back in business. It's a great way to stay warm and it looks fabulous. Here are some examples:

I decided I wanted to try this look out with my new skinny jeans. I don't have high boots but I figured they were high enough for what I was going for. As I was getting ready, I noticed that my jeans kept bunching up over my boot, no doubt because they weren't high enough. No matter what I did, I couldn't get them to smooth out. It wasn't until later that I saw this:

It's called the Jean Strap and it's basically a suspender for your jeans! This falls under the "why didn't I think of that" category but it's a really smart idea. I am definitely tempted to buy these so I can actually pull off the look without buying new boots. You can buy them here at Jean Straps website. Would any of you use this product?

"Bryant Park; Here We Come" PR Finale Pt. 2

*** Spoiler Alert*** If you have not seen the episode and don't know who the winner is, watch before you read!

Throughout the season, I have summarized each episode and presented the winners and losers from each challenge. Since we know what is happening on this episode (the 3 winners presenting their collections at Bryant Park and the judges deciding the winner of Project Runway), I'm not going to summarize like I have. I am simply going to go through the highlights of the episode and give my opinion, including links to pictures of each designer's collections and the winner.

The first half of the episode was pretty uneventful. Obviously, the designers were stressed and hurrying to finish their designs before the big day. When the big day arrived, I was particularly surprised to see Tim as high-strung as he was. He was freaking out when the designer's models were not lined up yet and this is definitely the most emotional we've seen Tim yet.

The judges for the Bryant park show was Michael Kors, Nina Garcia, and some lady I have never seen or heard of before that is a fashion editor for some international paper. What I did notice was that her Bump-It/There's Something About Mary bangs were extremely scary. You can't see it well here but yikes.

Althea was the first to present her collection. You can see here entire collection here: Althea's Collection. I thought overall her collection was strong and had a lot to say. It's clear she has a knack for knowing what is hot and pairing it together. Some pieces almost looked like she bought them and put them together and others looked very original but I was pretty pleased with the whole show. My favorite outfit was this green dress and leather jacket, which looked great together and gave her collection just a pop of color.

Second to present was Carol Hannah. You can see her collection here: Carol Hannah's Collection. I loved Carol Hannah's collection. It was the most colorful, it played with detail and volume nicely and to me, it seemed mostly consistent and relevant to who she is. There were a couple of oufits I loved from this collection. The first was the very first outfit to come out... it was bold, playful, and definitely grabbed your attention. My other favorite was actually her 13th look; a gorgeous blue gown with great detail and flowy fabric.

The last designer to present was Irina. You can see her collection here: Irina's Collection. For someone that won the most challenges this season, I was not impressed with her collection. We already knew it was going to be mostly black, which was one strike against her, but I couldn't see any of the detail she had put into it because it was black. I was not a fan of the helmets, even though it might have been seen as cutting edge. If I had to choose a favorite look, it would be the gray coat with the leather pants because it looks the most like something I would wear and would be found in stores.

After seeing everyone's collections, I immediately thought Carol Hannah was the winner. Her collection to me seemed so fresh and colorful, while Irina and Althea's collections had some similarities and were otherwise dull in color.

The judges' critiques of each collection were surprisingly positive, given that they like to accentuate the bad sometimes (especially Nina). They commented on how cutting edge Althea was and that her knitwears were impeccable. They loved Carol Hannah's colors and details but said the line wasn't cohesive. Nina mentioned how bad all black was to Irina again and that they've seen the whole "warrior" look before but that she made everything nicely and that it had the best storyline.

There is a lot of time wasting and Heidi calls Carol Hannah's name and tells her she is out. I couldn't believe my ears. She was out before Althea? I thought she was going to win for sure and she was the first out... I was upset. Now it's down to Althea and Irina. I'm thinking "They chastised Irina a lot for her collection and they seem to like Althea's point of view so she must be the winner." They waste even more time and finally Heidi says "Congratulations..... Irina!" NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! She couldn't have won! Blah!

So Irina is the winner of Project Runway Season 6. I was not and am not happy with this decision. While she makes impeccable clothes, I don't think they are anything special. Plus, she was the bitch of the season and I don't agree with the bitch winning in the end (note Jeffrey from Season 3... I hated him!) I really wish Carol Hannah or Althea could have won it because they are nice, talented, and deserved a win. I know their lives don't end here and that they will be successful in their own right but I was still disappointed.

So what did everyone think about the ladies' collections and the final decision. Do you agree Irina should have won?

I'm sad Project Runway is over but we don't have to wait too long for the next season... it starts January 14th!

Holiday Velvet; Hit or Miss?

I received my fabulous Real Simple magazine in the mail yesterday and was so excited to see what it had in store for the holidays. It has a great section on gifts under $50 and tons of homemade ideas for people on a budget so I suggest you go out and buy a copy!

One section that caught my attention was their focus on velvet pieces for the holidays. I've owned velvet before but I'm pretty sure it had flowers attached and I was 8. I contemplated whether I would by velvet anything and I don't think I would, but these looks do make a statement.

Are you wearing velvet this holiday season??

Planning a Christmas Party

I know, it's not even Thanksgiving yet and I'm already talking about Christmas. This year has been flying by so fast and by the time Thanksgiving is done, I will only have 2 short weeks to vamp up my house for Christmas and start getting ready for the Christmas party. This is our first Christmas party and I am so excited to plan!

I am using my day off today to put together a guest list and find an invitation to send. I wanted to send mailed invitations because I think it's more traditional and elegant. However, money is tight this year so I'm going to have to go the free route and use e-invitations. Evite has some great looking ones that I will have to sift through today.

I have a question for all you fabulous ladies. I think I have the decor more or less ready to go (I tried to hit up the early Christmas sales) but what I'm not sure about is what kind of food and drinks I should serve. I know wine and liquor should be available but does anyone have a great Christmas punch or cocktail recipe they've used? What about great hors devours that have been a hit at your Christmas party?

Any suggestions would be great! I'll keep you posted on my planning process :)

Fall This and That

Things have been busy lately and I've found myself losing some inspiration, which can happen when money is tight and you're not out as much. It's gotten cooler in Florida, which I love because opening the windows in your house just does something to you, makes you feel like you're outside but without all the bugs haha.

In the spirit of fall, or what is considered fall in Florida right now (high in the mid 70s), I decided to paint my nails a fun fall shade.

It's called Plum Pudding by Covergirl and it's one of the best dark reds around. Every time I look at this color, I think of fall and Thanksgiving, which is so close I can taste it.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, I can't wait to make the dish I make every year; Green Bean Casserole. I only eat it for Thanksgiving so it always holds that special place in my heart and has to be my favorite side dish. Chef's tip: I use the recipe on the French Fried Onions can... it's already right there, so I don't have to go flipping through a book. Here is the recipe for those of you cooking dinner this Thanksgiving.

Green Bean Casserole

Ingredients

  • 1 (10 3/4 oz.) can CAMPBELL'S® Cream of Mushroom Soup

  • 3/4 cup milk

  • 1/8 tsp. black pepper2 (9 oz. each) pkgs. frozen cut green beans, thawed* (I use 2 cans of green beans instead)

  • 1 1/3 cups FRENCH'S® Original or Cheddar French Fried Onions

Directions

  1. MIX soup, milk and pepper in a 1 1/2 -qt. baking dish. Stir in beans and 2/3 cup French Fried Onions.
  2. BAKE at 350°F for 30 min. or until hot.
  3. STIR. Top with remaining 2/3 cup onions. Bake 5 min. until onions are golden.
Have a great day!

My Fashion Finds

I was bad yesterday. I headed to the mall simply to buy a Christmas present but bought a couple of things for myself. I headed to the Brighton store, which is my grandmother's favorite, and bought her these earrings for Christmas:

After that, I thought I would swing by Charlotte Russe, one of my favorite stores, to see what they had. I found a beautiful scarf with a great blue paisley print on it (the picture does not do it justice) for only $9!

Being in Florida, scarves are never really a necessity and I only own 3 now, but I am determined to learn how to tie them and plan to wear them more often, especially this one. I also decided to finally cave in and buy a skinny jean:

I have told myself I wouldn't get caught up in the trend and that my chicken legs are just too skinny for skinny jeans but I love love love the "boot over jeans" look and it can really only be accomplished with skinny jeans. Plus, I realized they look great with heels as well, but I'm still not on board the whole "skinny jeans with flats" look, maybe because I have boat feet. Those will be my last purchases for myself until Christmas, at least that is what I am telling myself :) Happy Sunday!

"Knits and Stomach Bugs" PR Finale Part 1

***I don't think there are any spoilers but I'll warn ya just in case***

The designers were told they had to make a 12-piece collection with a budget of $9,000 and that Tim will be checking their progress. Flash forward to 10 weeks after the final 3 revealing and Tim is in snowy Huntington, Long Island where Carol Hannah has relocated since the last episode. She invites him into her house and takes him upstairs to see her collection so far. She explains that her inspiration was a night tour of Duke University and that she was trying some things differently, like pants and shorts instead of all dresses. She shows some capes to go with her long dresses that he thinks look matronly but he overall seems impressed with her work.

Carol Hannah then tells Tim that her family flew in from South Carolina and that they are going to make a delicious Southern meal that will require some of his help. They head downstairs and meet her family and then Tim puts on an apron and starts working on the biscuits (which was hilarious to watch). They sit down to eat and discuss Carol Hannah as a child, including awkward pictures. Carol Hannah walks Tim out and bids him goodbye til she heads to New York.

Next, Tim visits Irina in New York City. She has the sketches for her designs up and starts showing him some of her looks, which are heavy in knits and furs. She says that her inspiration was Coney Island because she grew up close to there and she directs him to screenprinted shirts with Coney Island landmarks on them that she is going to put behind some of her looks. He says it's risky but he likes that. He does comment that he doesn't like one of her fur vests but is overall pleased with her designs.

Afterwards, Irina tells Tim he is meeting her and her family at their favorite restaurant in NYC. Tim shows up and they start talking about showing up in NYC from Georgia (the country, not the state) and that Irina and her sisters have to make something of themselves in America.

Finally, Tim pays a visit to Althea in Dayton, Ohio. He has trouble using the manual elevator and shows up in a workspace type place where Althea's collection is. Althea is glad that he is there because she is stuck and says her inspiration was Sci-fi women, who are strong and have different style sense. She shows him a long coat that he is not fond of and he stresses to her how important editing is.

Then, Althea and Tim walk over to Althea's parent's house to meet everyone, including her cute boyfriend Stuart. Her parents talk about how she asked for a sewing machine at the age of 5 and always whipped up outfits when she and her sisters didn't have anything to wear.

The visits are over but not the surprises. We see Tim call Irina a few days later to let her know that the Coney Island landmarks from her shirts are trademarked and that she can't use them. She starts freaking out wondering what she is going to do instead.

It's 5 days until Bryant Park and the designers start descending onto New York City. Althea is the first to show up and is soon followed by Irina. Then the awkwardness begins. They sit around trying to talk about whatever hoping Carol Hannah will show up soon. It becomes night and they get a visit from Tim, who tells them Carol Hannah isn't coming today because she has a contagious stomach bug. He directs their attention to champagne given by Heidi and they toast on being in NYC for Fashion Week and Carol Hannah feeling better.

It's 4 days til the show and they show up at Parsons to begin finishing their looks. Althea and Irina begin working and suddenly there is a surprise! Carol Hannah is there, feeling a little better but still warns them not to get too close. Tim shows up to give their collections another looksy and gives them more or less the same critiques as last time. The only difference is that he notices Irina's collection is mostly black or gray, which he says is not good.

It's their turn to cast their models and usually designers fight over the best ones but this time, they seems pretty congenial and got through it rather easily.

As they continue to work on their designs, they get another surprise; Michael Kors and Nina Garcia are here (now he wants to show up)! They have come to give them some tips on Fashion Week and answer their questions. One funny tip Nina gives is that a full black collection will not bode well on the runway but Irina interviews that she likes that it's all black and she is keeping it. They thank them and give them awkward hugs before they leave.

It's 3 days til the show and they are fitting their muse models with their signature piece that will be put in front of the judges to determine the winner. Everyone doesn't know which one they are going with yet and put their models in all sorts of looks to find out. Then, Tim and Heidi show up, which is usually bad, and give them another surprise; they have to create a 13th look that goes with their collection. The designers faces go white and you can see the stress in their faces. They aren't at it alone though; the last 3 designers from the show are here! Logan, Gordana, and Christopher step out and surprise them as their new help. They draw from a bag on who gets who and are set to go to Mood.

They get back to the workroom and start working on their 13th look while their helpers finish up their designs. We get a shot of them heading back to the hotel and Carol Hannah throwing up from all the movement, which might mean she will be sick right up until the show.

I liked this episode simply because I always love seeing Tim go to weird destinations and try to fit in with families, which never works but he's cute for trying. The awkwardness between Althea and Irina was uncomfortable but I'm glad CH was there as the mediator, so to speak. Next week is Fashion Week and I hold true to my prediction. I think Carol Hannah will win because her collection looks stronger and looks like herself. I think Irina's all black collection will come back to bite her in the ass and I think Althea's collection seems too all over the place. We shall see who is the winner next week!
