Sex And The City 2: A Review

*** Spoiler Alert *** For all you ladies who haven't seen it yet, stop on by when you have :)

Last night, my girlfriends and I got dressed up, had dinner and drinks, then went to see SATC 2. We were very bad and snuck cosmos into the theater (some of the people sitting near us were jealous, haha). I was excited to see it since I loved the first movie so much. Here is what I thought;

  • This movie was less serious and more flighty than the first. It did cover the problems everyone was having, but some of them were a tad ridiculous.
  • Fashion didn't take as much of a front seat as it did in the last. It was less about labels and more about Morrocan/Middle East style outfits, which were beautiful, but sometimes a little cheesy (see Miranda above).
  • It was nice to see Charlotte frazzled for once... all we usually see is the perfect Pollyanna who has it all, but this time she shows that sometimes you just need a break.
  • I love Samantha but they couldn't have aged her any more in this movie. Her whole problem was preventing menopause and when they confiscate her pills and creams in Abu Dhabi, she hits it hard and ages before your eyes. It reminded me how old she really is (52).
  • Even though Carrie and Big's marital problem seemed a tad trivial, it was very relatable in that after the newlywed stage is over, the second year can be a bit boring and "un-sparkly". Big's whole vice was wanting to watch tv all the time and Carrie wanted to always go out. I've heard that before.
  • Miranda decided to quit her big lawyer job when her boss started treating her like crap and she couldn't take it anymore. If you know Miranda, you know she can't stay unemployed long.
  • They did touch on a very serious subject that happens in the Middle East; if you display public affection of any kind, you can get arrested and Samantha definitely does. Of course she would, right?
  • The karoake part had to be one of the most cheesiest and unnerving parts of the movie. Who would sing "I Am Woman" in an Abu Dhabi karoake club?
  • The gay wedding? So over the top. Swans, all men choir, white everywhere, dresses to die for. I would have rather seen Barbara Streisand than Liza Minelli... her dancing to Single Ladies was exactly how a 70-something woman would dance it.
  • I love Charlotte but who wears vintage Valentino while baking cupcakes with two young children??
  • Carrie and Aiden was the biggest part of the movie. Of course there was still chemistry and of course they were going to kiss, who ever doubted it? She did the right thing by telling Big but it's understandable why he was upset.
  • The movie was actually taped in Morocco and boy, this makes me want to go. I could do without the sand and camels though :)
  • Carrie and Big's apartment? Gorgeous!
  • I love the difference between the first class way they arrived and the lower class way that they left. As Carrie said, "Oh how the mighty have fallen".
  • There was one big lesson they taught in this movie; every marriage/relationship is different. Some are very traditional and some make their own rules. Nobody is completely right when it comes to love.
Overall, I am disappointed it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. There was some great moments and some not so great moments but it's sad that the whole series might end on that note.

If you have seen it, what did you think of the movie?

  1. I enjoyed it. Lots of beautiful things to look at and the Morocco/Abu Dhabi parts were great--definitely made me want to hop on a plane and check into the Jewel Suite.

Yes, some parts of the movie were cheesy, but overall I liked it. I also really don't have a problem with some things in the movie being OOT or unrealistic because that's pretty much why I watch. lol

I think in some ways Carrie was being childish with Big. Sure, sometimes marriage loses the "sparkle" (I liked the part in the hotel when she said they were in the middle of hot sex and a screaming baby), but I think she was being a little unreasonable. At the end I think she finally got it--she had been chasing around this man for so long and now he just wanted to be with her and she wasn't even happy with that.

I loved the Charlotte-Miranda confessional. I agree that it was nice to see Charlotte a little less perfect. Oh, and those desert outfits were ridiculous (they got THOSE at the hotel gift shop?!) and did you see Liza's legs?

  4. Ive heard nothing but bad reviews. I think they dragged this series out as long as it could go. Now, its almost a joke. Might wait for pay per view.

  6. Here are my thoughts on it...LOVED the series...liked the first movie...liked the second movie, maybe a tad less than the first one...but that's ok. I was just excited to see my girls back. I enjoyed fun Miranda...Totally related to Charlotte (motherhood IS hard) and I gotta disagree with you a wee bit about the fashion. Halston, Dior, Chanel and one of my favorites...the Galliano for Dior newsprint dress all made wonderful appearances. True, a lot of the fashion was a little costumey, but the labels we know and love were still front and center. I think the people who gave such horribly negative reviews about the flick expected a bit too much. I went to say hello to "old friends" that were a huge part of my 20s and to see some fun fashion...and that's just what I got! Oh and DUDE, how could you not love Liza's cameo? For her age, she WORKED it!!
